Service Providers face enormous challenges as powerful technologies and social applications emerge and the Internet comes of age. The commoditization of traditional services, intense rivalry in the broadband market and heavy-handed regulation could all trip them up. But the argument that providers are heading for a grim bit-pipe future is surely overstated. The Economist Intelligence Unit report: Strategy Options: Fighting Smart for Telecom Operators suggests that there are five approaches or typologies that service providers could adopt to regenerate growth and address the challenges facing the industry. These types give the service provider a number of very different options ranging from approaches which involve being more efficient, working with rather than fighting against new technologies and going into a new business areas and making use of partnerships.
